How to clean and disinfect your hardware

As a hardware agnostic solutions provider, we list some basic principles for taking good care of your equipment. We do recommend to also investigate per device the specific guidelines of the hardware brand , definitely with regards to the cleaning solution to use in order not to damage your equipment.

Mobile devices

  • Switch off the device.
  • Moisten a cloth with an approved cleaning solution.
  • Wipe the device.

Avoid pooling the cleaning solution on any part of the product to prevent the liquid from gaining access to the inside of the device. The display window, keyboard, triggers and connector areas require the most attention to avoid liquid entering the device.

  • Use a cotton-tipped swab to clean recessed and areas that are difficult to reach.
  • Special attention to the display or lens.

After cleaning and disinfecting the device, it is recommended that the display or lens area be cleaned with a glass cleaner and quickly wiped dry to remove any streaking.

  • Let the device dry before using it.
  • Before handling the device again, your hands should be completely dry because some hand sanitisers contain ingredients that can be harmful for the device.

The 5:1 rule
A device should be disinfected after it has been cleaned five times.

Voice equipment

  • Provide individual headset for users; for obvious hygiene reasons, these can’t be shared amongst users.
  • Refresh consumables such as ear pads or foam windscreens.
  • If equipment is shared, clean it thoroughly with a cloth dampened in an approved cleaning solution.

Printers

Healthcare workers should disinfect the printers as follows, after each patient visit:

  • Clean the printer display with a damp cloth and after cleaning, dry with a soft cloth to prevent streaking.
  • Clean the printer housing and keypad using a damp cloth with an approved cleaning agent. If necessary, use a cotton-tip to reach tight areas.
  • After cleaning, dry with a soft cloth and let dry before use.
  • Always changes gloves before handling the printer to avoid re-contaminating the device.

There is a wide range of cleaning products registered for the use in healthcare. When selecting the products for you, it is important to consider the compatibility with your devices. Repeated use of chemicals cleaners may result in damage to the equipment because of its adverse effect on plastics.
