What is the Digital Product Passport (DPP)?
The DPP is a key element of the EU’s Circular Economy Action Plan. It is a digital record that provides detailed information about a product's entire value chain – its composition, origin, environmental impact, and recycling options, and more according to product group - promoting sustainable production and consumption patterns. Because consumers are increasingly demanding this type of information, the EU has introduced the DPP as a key component of the proposed Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which is set to be implemented in 2024.
The DPP approach starts with the marking of a physical “data carrier” on the product itself, its packaging or its documentation such as QR code or RFID tag.
This data carrier will include data that will differ according to the product group and that could be at model level identification, batch level identification or serial level identification.
Encourages product reuse, repair, and recycling.
Meets EU regulations for a circular economy.
Builds trust among your customers, investors, and other important stakeholders.
Offers consumers and businesses reliable data on product origins and sustainability.
Helps identify problems with authenticity, compliance, and environmental impact.
Enables companies to optimise processes to reduce environmental impact and ensure a more sustainable and efficient product lifecycle management.
The DPP will be implemented across the 27 EU member states, impacting global supply chains. The rollout will start with batteries in 2026, followed by apparel and consumer electronics. By 2030, the DPP will apply to approximately 30 product categories, promoting a widespread adoption of sustainable practices.
